Bong Joon-hoย (Korean:ย ๋ด์คํธ,ย Korean pronunciation:[poหลย tษuหnhoย โย poหลdสunษฆo]; born September 14, 1969) is a South Korean filmmaker. The recipient of threeย Academy Awards,ย his workย is characterised by emphasis on social and class themes,ย genre-mixing,ย dark comedy, and sudden tone shifts.
He first became known to audiences and achieved aย cult followingย with his directorial debut film, the black comedyย Barking Dogs Never Biteย (2000), before achieving both critical and commercial success with his subsequent films: the crime thrillerย Memories of Murderย (2003), the monster filmย The Hostย (2006), the science fiction action filmย Snowpiercerย (2013), which served as Bong's English language debut, and the acclaimed black comedy thrillerย Parasiteย (2019), all of which are among theย highest-grossing films in South Korea, withย Parasiteย also being the highest-grossing South Korean film in history.
All of Bong's films have been South Korean productions. However,ย Snowpiercer,ย Okjaย (2017) and Mickey 17ย (2025) areย Hollywood co-productions with significant use of the English language. Two of his films have been screened in competitions at theย Cannes Film Festival โ Okjaย inย 2017ย andย Parasiteย inย 2019; the latter earned theย Palme d'Or, the first for a South Korean film.ย Considered an immediate favourite by theย Academy Awards,ย Parasiteย became the first South Korean film to receive Academy Award nominations, with Bong winningย Best Picture,ย Best Director, andย Best Original Screenplay, makingย Parasiteย the first film in the award's history not in English to win Best Picture.ย In 2017, Bong was included onย Metacritic's list of the 25 best film directors of the 21st century.ย In 2020, Bong was included inย Time's annual list ofย 100 Most Influential Peopleย andย Bloombergย 50.
